The Weaving Word

Weaving together the threads that make up my passion for the written word…as an author, editor, and follower of The Word.

Inspiration Sunday!

During Camp Nano this month I’ve spent a lot of time escaping (or trying to) into the fantasy world of my novella. When writing a work of fantasy, some inspiring words from Tolkien to get you through are never a bad thing.

Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!
― J.R.R. Tolkien

I know a hobbit house when I see one!
As for escape through fantasy–this is what stumps me about most YA fantasy fiction. The authors keep setting it in middle schools. Who the blazes wants to read a fantasy which includes algebra class? These authors keep dumping you right back into what you’re trying to get out of.

So very true! I couldn’t escape Algebra fast enough when I was in school. I was much happier in the art studio, making my own visual escape from reality.

As far as the house goes, I wonder what would happen if you approached a contractor and said “build me one of those.” Assuming the bureaucrats would give you the permits, that is. I so want a hobbit house.
