The Weaving Word

Weaving together the threads that make up my passion for the written word…as an author, editor, and follower of The Word.

Featured Author: Louise Findlay

Solstice TourEnjoy this month-long tour featuring authors of all fantasy genres.  Maybe among them you will find a new favorite! (Note that I have not read all of these works, and their appearance here is not necessarily a personal endorsement.)

Louise Findlay is today’s featured author from the Magic of Solstice Fantasy Writers’ Tour.

Help us get to know you better!  What do you write, and how do you describe yourself as an author?

Well I write fantasy though I dabble within the genre. I write short stories, poetry and I’m working on a novella. I like short works as you have to be creative with your words – each one has to count. I’ve created some light-hearted pieces for younger children and some darker stuff, though not that dark compared to what is actually considered dark these days.

I’m a young author and pretty new to authoring. I’ve self-published a few short stories here and there and I have a few pieces in anthologies. I’m still writing my (kinda debut) novella which is like my magnum opus or my first long story which I’m eager to finish.

Of all the characters you’ve created, which one do you wish you could hang out with in real life and why?

I don’t know. I suppose my (wait, it isn’t my dragon. Oh I suppose it is since I created it) dragon from The Magic Christmas Dragon & Other Poetry Tales. Dragons are cool, it’s a fire-breathing one just what’s not to like. I wouldn’t want to be there with it at Christmas though. The dragon hates Christmas and to find out why… You’ll just have to read my poetry book.

What innermost passion drives your writing, and what do you hope your readers feel or experience when they read your work?

Well all in all I want to the get the best out of each story I write. I hope that people will feel just a sliver of the spark that made me write that particular piece.

Dreamless Roads Anthology

Join us on the Dreamless Roads where we step across the threshold into the unknown to discover words that have turned into worlds of imagination, legend and, of course, fantasy. Commune with your inner elf, or dwarf, quest with heroes and warriors, and cross the borders into the land of gods and dragons ~ and the past and future realms of possibility and adventure.

The Rogue’s Odyssey
(Also included in Dreamless Roads anthology)

Heroes with an edge are always fascinating and when the métier is poetic, the romance tends to rise exponentially because, after all, everyone loves a rascal who’s only a heartbeat away from being on the wrong side of the tracks, but who somehow always battles on to win the day, whether that’s fleeing from dastardly henchmen, or fighting a terrifying dragon.

Excerpt from The Magic Christmas Dragon & Other Poetry Tales – “The Fey Save the Day”

The dragon that lived in Winta Cave, had another Christmas to rue.

The fey planned to save the day but did he know that too?

With their magic they had a plan, it was quite cunning too.

The dragon never stood a chance, oh this day he’d rue.

They snuck behind him in his cave, careful to avoid him.

With bated breath, they wait to strike, oh how they abhorred him.

Fast asleep, it was time, time to destroy him.

Oh how the fey adored, heroes of a whim.

“Sprash na dah” the spell cast, ready to kill him.

The dragon awoke and started to sneeze, he was allergic to them.

“Oh no, we’d better retreat” for the fey were small in number.

“Oh yes, flee now” they skedaddled on out of there.

The dragon then thought to stop, not such a great idea?

“Next Christmas” he thought.

He’d sneezed and fought, it was time to sleep now.
