The Weaving Word

Weaving together the threads that make up my passion for the written word…as an author, editor, and follower of The Word.

Featured Author: Joshua Robertson

Solstice TourEnjoy this month-long tour featuring authors of all fantasy genres.  Maybe among them you will find a new favorite! (Note that I have not read all of these works, and their appearance here is not necessarily a personal endorsement.)

Joshua Robertson is today’s featured author from the Magic of Solstice Fantasy Writers’ Tour.

MidwinterCoverHelp us get to know you better!  What do you write, and how do you describe yourself as an author?

I focus primarily on dark fantasy and epic fantasy, though I will dabble into other genres on my personal blog. When my writing is analyzed, I am told that I write like the Irish author, James Joyce. I like to test the boundaries of the human experience and place my characters in less than pleasant situations.

Of all the characters you’ve created, which one do you wish you could hang out with in real life and why?

The most obvious answer would be Dorofej. He would be a hoot. He is intelligent, witty, and overall, a kind man. However, truth be told, I think I would like to spend some time with Falmagon. He is a man that has much more beneath the surface than he shows to others. I would be fascinated to learn what experiences made him the man he has become.

MapWhat innermost passion drives your writing, and what do you hope your readers feel or experience when they read your work?

The answer is actually one in the same: an inquisitive mind. I am passionate to learn more about the world and to question the schemes that have been laid before me. I, too, want to encourage my readers to look at the world through a different lens. It is my hope that my readers feel connected to the characters, can resonate with the feelings of love and loss, and finish the novel questioning their own place in the world we inhabit together.

Melkorka Synopsis

MelkorkaCoverKaelandur was forged by the Highborn to slay one of their own, Nedezhda Mager. As their slave, Branimir Baran never thought to question his cruel masters until he is forced to take part in the execution. His actions begin a chain of events that will lead him to confront demons, cannibals, and himself as he is forced to question his own morality and the true meaning of good and evil.

A Midwinter Sellsword Synopsis:

A bastard child of a noble family escaped the subterranean city after being enslaved to the gladiator pits. After being lured into the daunting political games, will he ever find his freedom again?

Excerpt from Gladiators and Thieves

Argus rubbed his fingers together, leaning against the desk with his free hand. It kept him from pacing around the room. “Tell me, Lady Oenus, why would you want to aid in your father’s downfall?”

She blinked a couple times, jaw angled awkwardly as she forced the words from her lips, “He planned to marry me to Frederick Quist.”

“I love another.”

Her words were shaky, giving the impression that she was either full of emotion or lying.

“Of course you do.” He muttered.

The plot was so thick that his head was spinning. This was exactly the reason why he did not dabble in the Eadfel. Every noble and their child were scheming to have their own wants satisfied. ‘Greed was the bloodiest path for governance.’

“Well,” Argus said, “what is it that you are asking from me? As I told you in Middle City, I know nothing is free in Hawkhurst.”

Lillian shifted her eyes to Syomin, talking softly as though the walls had ears. “Lead my father to believe that the evidence points towards House Quist. That is all. Be certain that he does not suspect the Hedlunds or the Ekdals.”

“And, what will I receive in return?”

“Your freedom, of course,” Syomin said.

Argus laughed, “You cannot promise me that. No man has the power to give another man freedom.”

I would so love to sit down and spend a day with Branimir. He is my favorite in Melkorka. Your choice is okay Joshua but you are sadly mistaken to who is a better companion and who would be a hoot. 🙂
