The Weaving Word

Weaving together the threads that make up my passion for the written word…as an author, editor, and follower of The Word.

Matthew 7:7-12 – Ask, Seek, Knock

There are times when God feels so huge, and distant…how could the creator of the universe possibly take an interest in flawed, insignificant me?  Yet this passage is a beautiful reminder of God’s love and His desire for a personal relationship with, yes, even me.  It is pretty humbling.  All I have to do is ask, to seek His face, His voice, His hand, and He will reach out to me with all the tenderness of a loving parent.  “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?  If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, know how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”  Thankfully our heavenly parent is not only loving, but wise.  Sometimes we get trapped in our earthly perspective.  Our daily struggles and desires prompt us to ask for things that seem perfectly reasonable, yet God knows what their true effect would be on us.  This passage by no means says that God will be our cosmic genie, giving us anything we want as long as we ask.  But if we are truly seeking Him, and His will for us, He will never hold back His blessings or turn us away.  Pretty comforting.

Such simple, beautiful truth.  Why is it so difficult to grasp at times?  Maybe because deep down I know I am still but an immature youth in God’s eyes, asking not for that which would nourish me, but for junk-filled treats when I haven’t eaten my dinner yet.  Thankfully God only says yes when we learn to ask for the right things.  God, please let me know your will for me so that I ask for the right things and receive your good gifts.
