The Weaving Word

Weaving together the threads that make up my passion for the written word…as an author, editor, and follower of The Word.

Matthew 6:1-4 – Giving to the Needy

Have you ever known someone who did something great…and made a big show of it? At first their actions seem amazingly generous–until you gradually come to realize it was really only about them all along. The gift is tainted. God doesn’t want us to give out of the desire for attention, “to be honored by men.” After all, nothing we could possibly give is ours to begin with. When we become Christians, our lives, and our hearts, are supposed to change. What we do, and what we give, should be out of a spirit of genuine generosity. Our good works don’t always have to be done in secret, but we need to be careful of our motivations. Do we expect to receive something in return? Acknowledgement? Praise? Compensation? Are we giving up our eternal reward in favor of a temporary earthly one?

Jesus, you came to earth and gave all of yourself to us, without wanting anything in return. All we need to do is accept the gift. Help me to imitate your generous spirit, and a have a true desire to help others, to accept your overflowing mercies and freely pour them out to those in need. Amen.
