The Weaving Word

Weaving together the threads that make up my passion for the written word…as an author, editor, and follower of The Word.

Matthew 5:13-16 – Salt and Light

Ever feel like a spiritual hoarder? Study, prayer, worship, even ministry, very self-focused and all about us. We get into ruts like that at times, but the effect is always the opposite of what we expect. Instead of feeding and filling us, we find ourselves feeling drained and empty. Why? We weren’t made to take in God’s blessings and keep them close in our fist, like there won’t be enough to go around. Instead, we were made in God’s image–a giving, loving, God, willing to sacrifice himself for us.

Jesus says we are the “salt of the earth.” Salt that loses its saltiness is “no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” What good are we when we lose sight of our God-given mission in this world? Our lives, and our offering, become flavorless and help no one, not even ourselves.

Instead we are supposed to be “the light of the world” so that we can help the lost find their way out of the darkness and into God’s light. By letting “our light shine before others” we are allowing others to see how God’s love has changed us, and giving Him the glory that He rightly deserves.

Though good deeds do not save us, when they are genuine and guided by the Spirit, they do say something about our character, and about the nature of the God we serve. I think this week I’m going to take a long hard look at where my focus has been…and pray about how I can do a better job at being the salt and light that Jesus wants me to be.
