Weaving together the threads that make up my passion for the written word…as an author, editor, and follower of The Word.
Simple, beautiful, and eye-opening. In this passage of scripture, Jesus challenges the conventional wisdom of the day that material wealth and success were God’s blessings (and likewise, poverty and other difficulties were a sign of God’s wrath). We can’t fault the people of Jesus’ time too much, because we still tend to think that way, don’t we? When everything is going great for us, we’re certain that God has blessed us. And when things aren’t going great, we’re pretty quick to ask if we’re being punished. The Beatitudes remind us that God operates by a different standard than our own.
I don’t think there is anything intelligent I can add to these words of Jesus, so I’m just going to re-write them here, meditate on them, and encourage others to do the same.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs in the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
God, though we have heard these Beatitudes so many times before, help us to hear them again with new ears, open eyes, and a fresh perspective. Allow them to penetrate our hearts and give us a better understanding of who you are, and who we are called to be.
